State Newsletter – July 2020

Hello Team Virginia!

We would like to say hello to all of you and wish you luck as you adjust to the COVID-19 restrictions and get back to some form of regular business.  This is a difficult time for all of us and we would like you to know that we are here to help if you have any questions.  Please email the Chairman at any time for any reason.

Here is what we know as of today:

Information and guidance coming from the Men’s program is to plan for a normal season.  Sanctions for meets are available for purchase.  Sanction fees are non-refundable.  For further information, please log in to usagym.org for more information.

That said, we are not overly optimistic at this point that we will have a normal season.  With coronavirus numbers escalating in many parts of the country and states inconsistently increasing or decreasing their restrictions, any season we have will, in no way, be normal.  There are some potentially viable virtual competitive ideas being looked at by various members of our community, but there hasn’t been anything concrete in the way of development or implementation and there are also potential SafeSport issues that may arise through a virtual situation.

We wish we had more to report to you, but currently, there has been limited discussion about a season and competitions because the data for COVID has been continuously inconsistent.  We believe that this season will be more about surviving the effects of COVID on our training schedules and our way of life, than it will be about competing.

Due to the information we have, we will be postponing our traditional assessment fees until we know what our competitive year is going to look like.

Things to consider for the upcoming 2020-2021 Season:

  • If we do not get the opportunity to have a competitive season, we will need to find an appropriate way to honor our 2021 Seniors.  Our board of directors will be coming up with ideas, but we would like to hear from you as well.  Please email the chairman if you have any suggestions.  We believe that a Senior Gift is not enough.
  • Aerial East is being given first option to host the 2021 Level 4 State Meet due to being denied the right this past season because of the COVID
  • Gymstrada will be unable to act as host in 2021 and Williamsburg Gymnastics has considered a bid for Level 5-10/JD State Championships and we are open to bids from any other gym that would like to plan to host (Hurricane was previously considering 2021)
  • We will still need to prepare for a State Championships in 2021 even if we are unable to compete in 2020
  • The current board of directors will continue as is as there were no requests for a vote and no nominations were made as per emails sent out during quarantine.  For a list of the current board and the positions that are available and their descriptions, please check the state handbook.  If you are interested in being a board member, the next vote will be 2022.
  • Kevin Hallinan’s term as State Chairman ends after the 2021st season and he would like to be re-elected for another term.  If you would like to run for State Chairman, we would like to know prior to the 2021 vote, which will happen at the 2021 State Championships.
  • Our Virginia State Board of Directors will meet in mid-July and in August.  We will work on the State Schedule, State Meeting, Usually yearly things and we hope to have more information to be able to do so.
  • It is possible that our yearly State Meeting will be a zoom meeting.
  • It is possible we will have one or several informal State Meetings because we miss all of you.

Thank you for listening and thank you for being a part of Team Virginia!
